FIRST PERSON DOCUMENTARY

During the months of April and May of 2007, Wister 5th and 6th Graders viewed the trailer for an upcoming film called First Person, which chronicles the lives of 6 Philadelphia High School students as they try to make it to college.  The film was conceived and directed by Benjamin Herold, and should be completed and ready for screening some time after the summer.

As part of their work with the First Person documentary, students responded with essays and a short film - check out the First Person website to see the finished movie!  Students from rooms 205 and 103 are featured in the video.

WISTER DREAM FLAGS

Each year, teachers at Wister have escorted students to the Kimmel Center for a wonderful celebration of "dream poems" - check out www.dreamflags.org to see photos and information about this event.  Principal Donna Smith has been the driving force behind this great project, where every student at Wister creates an original poem, inspired by the work of Langston Hughes.  For more information about the dreamflags at Wister, you can visit our art page.

BIG NEWS! Our school library was completely renovated.  It received new shelving, furniture, and carpeting, as well as 12 new computers.  Wister's library is now home to 12 computers and a new Lexmark networked color printer.  Thousands of new books have arrived and are being enjoyed by Wister staff and students.  In addition to our new printed materials, the Wister library is home to two new SmartBoards for presentations.  Our new library holdings will be managed online by the latest Follett Library software.

AFTER-SCHOOL VIDEO DOCUMENTARY CLUB

                        WHYY's Craig Santoro

This year, we are pleased to offer a new technology-based after school program to WIster students in the 5th and 6th grade. The School District of Philadelphia and local PBS affiliate WHYY have partnered to offer this new extra-curricular program. In our new film-making club, students will work with camera equipment and video editing software to produce an original documentary program. Students will do the filiming, and plan the production of the video from start to finish.  For more information about video productions by students, visit WHYY's Learning Lab website.
