Thurgood Marshall Beacon Program

What are Beacons?

Beacons are community centers located in schools. A Beacon serves families living in the neighborhood surrounding its host school and the children and youth who attend that and other schools within the defined community. First introduced in New York City, Beacons have been established in other major cities across the nation. Beacons are a strategy for rebuilding communities of support and improved academic success for children, youth and their families in urban neighborhoods.

The goal of Philadelphia's Beacon program is to:

  • Establish "safe havens" for the communities' children, youth and adults;
  • Support community safety and organization;
  • Provide educational assistance and enrichment;
  • Expand youth development and leadership; and
  • Offer employment and training activities and opportunities.

Each Beacon will provide activities for all ages that will be designed with the input of the communities' residents.
