Why come to Powel School?

You may not know the full story about Powel School, so take a look at what Powel parents have to say about our school:

Powel really is a small school with GREAT expectations!  I see that in the administration, teachers and staff daily.  Not only do they expect great things from their students, but also from themselves, each other and from the families.  Powel is fortunate to have additional supports through the Children’s Literacy Initiative, Drexel University’s financial and staff support. Playworks, WePAC and the eat.right.now program as well as a strong Home and School Association.  The school is a small, diverse community that is safe, nurturing, and with high expectations of ALL of its students.  Powel truly is a gem in the Philadelphia School District!

Our daughter started Powel School with many obstacles and as parents we had great concerns. We contacted Principle Ellerbee and set up a conference with her. She was very professional and had many options for us to try, and the options were obtainable and realistic. She was very up front with us on the support that was to be given and how we were able to help. Two teachers, Teacher Gill and Teacher Olivia made sure that the communication lines were kept open and they supported our daughter in every way. They also were willing to give us as parents instruction and direction to help us support our daughter at home. With warm and great gratitude the school year ended with much success. We were very proud of the Powel staff support, as well as our daughter for their hard work and effort. We are proud to be called “The parents of a Powel School student.”

-Damon and Tonia Bennett, parents of Jonae Stewart

One reason why families should send their child to Powel is because there are not too many children, as opposed to other elementary schools, and a real sense of community is built. Powel's Teachers prepare the children for many challenges and also to be outstanding writers.

"The Sistrunks have been Powel Parents since 2006.  The day our daughter entered the school, our family grew.  We now consider ourselves a part of the Powel family.  We love the nurturing atmosphere that Powel offers our children and the parent/teacher involvement.  Our son is now attending Powel and I recommend Powel to anyone with elementary age children."

-Daneshia Sistrunk, Mother of Ian Sistrunk

"Our daughter's happiness is directly related to the positive experiences she's had at Powel School. Our daughter loves going to school. She enjoys playing on the playground with friends, participating in student clubs such as computers, gardening, or drama, and interacting within her classroom learning community. We've had fun building a volcano together, scavenging materials in the basement to do soundproofing experiments, reading Dr. Seuss in Spanish, and testing what cheese really is the most smelly.
I am grateful that my daughter feels safe, loved, and encouraged in Powel's small learning community. T. Joe, our daughter's current teacher, inspires his students to be active learners. His teaching style has helped our daughter evolve to be a self-confident, critical thinker. Throughout the years ,our daughter has benefited from the hard work and dedication of Powel teachers like T. Joe, who consistently go the extra mile to ensure students experience the caring, enrichment, and inspiration they need to succeed."
