GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programming).

 

What is GEAR UP: GEAR UP is a program designed to increase the number of low income students going to and succeeding in college.  GEAR UP works with a cohort of students starting in 6th and 7th grade and guides them through high school and helps to prepare them to succeed academically for college.

 

GEAR UP Programs:

 

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination): AVID is an elective class intended to work with students in the "academic middle."  AVID is a rostered elective class on period a day, students learn organizational and study skilss, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable.  Their self-images improve, and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students.

 

College ED: college planning and career exploration program designed to help students in grades 7 - 12 develop their capacity to succeed in college and in life.  The curriculum focuses on 3 major questions:  Who am I? Where am I going? And what do I want to do?

 

Career Choices: this is a career development curriculum aimed at building GEAR UP student skills, values, and their work ethic.  Next year's 8th grade students will receive 80 instructional hours in career choices curriculum.

 

Robotics: In an effort to increase GEAR UP students Math and Science comprehensio, all GEAR UP schools will have the opportunity to create Robotics clubs in their schools.  Robotics is a fun and interactive after-school initiative where GEAR UP students will have the opportunity to build and create various robots.  Students will aslo have the opportunity to enter various Robotics competitions.

 

GEAR UP Program Coordinator support:  Each GEAR UP school will have a dedicated GEAR UP Coordinator responsible for supporting various initiatives of the GEAR UP grant.  GEAR UP Coordinators are responsible for college and career programming for GEAR UP students and supporting GEAR UP schools in creating a College going culture.  Coordinators will provide college visits, career exploration experiences, career days, adn various other initiatives that meet GEAR UP goals. 

 

Additional Programming: GEAR UP will provide their students with opportunities for college trips, guest speakers, summer programming, career related experience, internship opportunities, mentoring supports, and other activities that will enhance the educational experience and motivate students toward academic success.

¿Que es AVID?

  (Avance Por Medio de Determinación Individual) es un programa internacional reconocido diseñado para preparar a estudiantes a que tengan éxito en los colegios e universidades.  Los estudiantes de AVID se registran en una clase electiva AVID.

 

El currículo de AVID se concentra en desarrollar las técnicas académicas y de estudio necesarias para el éxito en la escuela secundaria y más adelante.  El programa AVID ofrece actividades preparatorias de colegio, desarrollo de técnicas, guía vocacional, mentor personal, y tutoría.

 

 
Quién puede participar en AVID

 

AVID

Estudiantes en el séptimo o octavo grado en la escuela Fairhill.

Los estudiantes en AVID son, históricamente, estudiantes no bien representados en universidades de cuatro años (minorías étnicas, y/o bajos ingresos y/o primera generación en universidad y/o circunstancias especiales) que:

 

· Quieren estar en el programa

· Tienen el potencial y deseo de ir a la universidad

· Seguros de su éxito en la escuela

· Poseen determinación individual y sentido de responsabilidad

· Tienen un  GPA de 2.0-3.5

· Tienen buena asistencia

· Tienen buen comportamiento

· Tienen puntaje promedio a alto en las pruebas estándares.

 

 

Aun su niño ha sido aceptado en el programa, usted recibirá invitaciones a los varios talleres que serán tenidos a través del año para proveerle información de el progreso de su niño y logros, así como información en futura carrera y elecciones colegiales para sus niños.
