Penn Alexander Teachers Earn National Certification

Updated December 3, 2011

http://www.gse.upenn.edu/content/penn-alexander-teachers-earn-national-certification

12 teachers in the Penn Alexander School have achieved National Board Certification, the highest level of certification in the field of teaching.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) developed standards for what effective teachers should know and be able to do, along with a process to determine whether individual teachers meet these criteria.

To earn certification, a teacher must complete four portfolios that include written commentary and videos of classroom teaching that explicitly describes, analyzes and reflects on student work, teacher accomplishments and teaching practices. Teachers also must document how their teaching meets the standards and has a positive impact on student learning. The final step is a three-hour computerized assessment measuring the teacher's content knowledge and chosen area of certification.

Two teachers at the school – Kate Naughton (First Grade) and Darlene Schaffer (Learning Support) had been awarded the certification previously. Joining them in the 2010 round are:

Arlene Brown (Middle School Math)
Mary Ann Milewski (Second Grade)
Richard Staniec (Middle School Science)
Melissa Trusty (Kindergarten)
Hillary (Ehling) Tubin (Middle School Literacy)
Megan Wapner (Middle School Literacy)
Lisa Waters (Second Grade)

Congratulations to this year's recipients:

Michele Dixon (Elementary Science)
Jenny Shieh (5th Grade)
Jayne Downing (Librarian)

Enrollment Information

According to Philadelphia Board of Education policy, a child must be five years old by September 1 of the entering school year to be eligible for Kindergarten.

For first grade, a child must be six years old by September 1 of the entering school year. Families with a child under six may apply for early admission to first grade if the child has completed a full day, full year, accredited Kindergarten program.

For all grades, especially Kindergarten, the school registers students until classes are full. Parents are encouraged to register when the registration period begins to ensure a space for their child(s).

Registration is required for:

  • All Kindergarten students
  • Children who have moved to another city neighborhood over the summer
  • Children new to Philadelphia
  • Children transferring in from private, parochial and charter schools

Visit your neighborhood school to register your child and be sure to bring:

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Child’s up-to-date immunization records
  • Child’s last report card (not necessary for Kindergarten students)
  • Current proof of address in the parent or legal guardian’s name.

Be prepared to submit  the following to provide proof of address:

  • Gas bill
  • Electric bill
  • PA driver’s license
  • PA vehicle registration and car insurance

Eligible parents need to bring the documentation listed above* and complete an EH40 Application for Admission of Child to School form at the office.

*The school will not be able to register students with incomplete applications.

The Penn Alexander School draws students from a defined geographical area, like most Philadelphia public schools. After careful consideration of numerous options, the Board of Education approved the attendance zone shown on this map (please note the border runs down the middle of the street). Any school-age child living within this area is eligible to attend the school, and the attendance boundaries for the Lea, Wilson, Drew and Powel schools were altered effective July 1, 2001, to reflect the school's attendance area.
