Extra Curricular Activities

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT, CLUBS, & SPORTS

Penn Alexander provides a range of opportunities outside the classroom for extra academic assistance or advancement. The teaching staff directs a number of clubs in areas of student interest, including everything from basketball and gymnastics to student government and board games.

 Each year, the school community comes together to perform a school wide musical. Children in grades 3-8 are invited to audition for parts. Children can participate as members of the cast or stage crew.

Registration Information

Kindergarten registration begins for all School District of Philadelphia schools on 

Reminder: Your child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2012.

 You and your child can preview kindergarten by visiting your local school during the District-wide Kindergarten Open House.

Open House- March 6, 2012 and May 22, 2012. 

An additional tour date has been added for February 9, 2012 for the school.  All tours start at 9:30am.

Registration is required for:

• All Kindergarten students
• Children who have moved to another city neighborhood over the summer
• Children new to Philadelphia
• Children transferring in from private, parochial and charter schools

Visit your neighborhood school to register your child and be sure to bring:

• Child’s birth certificate
• Child’s up-to-date immunization records
• Child’s last report card (not necessary for Kindergarten students)
• Parent Identification -Current Drivers License/Non-Drivers License or  Valid Federal, State, or Municipal employment photo or Passport
• Current proof of address in the parent or legal guardian’s name.

Be prepared to submit the following to provide  proof of address:

• Gas bill
• Electric bill
• PA vehicle registration and car insurance

Enrollment Information

 Dates for registration for grades 1-8 will be announced in the spring.

According to Philadelphia Board of Education policy, a child must be five years old by September 1 of the entering school year to be eligible for Kindergarten.

For first grade, a child must be six years old by September 1 of the entering school year. Families with a child under six may apply for early admission to first grade if the child has completed a full day, full year, accredited Kindergarten program.

For all grades, especially Kindergarten, the school registers students until classes are full. Parents are encouraged to register when the registration period begins to ensure a space for their children.

Eligible parents need to bring the documentation listed above* and complete an EH40 Application for Admission of Child to School form at the office.

*The school will not be able to register students with incomplete applications.

 
The Penn Alexander School draws students from a defined geographical area, like most Philadelphia public schools. After careful consideration of numerous options, the Board of Education approved the attendance zone shown on this map (please note the border runs down the middle of the street). 

Technology at Home

KINDERGARTEN, FIRST AND SECOND GRADE

Students in Kindergarten through Second Grade have been using an application called TUX PAINT to create wonderful works of art. This program can be downloaded on your home computer if your child would like to further explore the painting and drawing tools. 3rd, 4th, AND 5th GRADES

Another great painting tool can be found online, and used right in your web browser to  manipulate photos, and create drawings or paintings at a more advanced level. SUMOPAINT is an application that incorporates some of the tools found in programs like Adobe Photoshop, but with a very user-friendly interface. Students learn to add layers to their projects and incorporate special effects or add text to artwork. Find this great application at www.sumopaint.com !
