At Mitchell, we give our students two gifts. One is roots. The other is wings.
S. Weir Mitchell Elementary
Message from the Principal, Stephanie Andrewlevich
I am pleased to introduce myself as the proud principal at S. Weir Mitchell School. After spending 17 years in leadership and teaching roles in various schools in the Kensington area of the city, it is an honor to become an active member of the Southwest Philadelphia community. When the decision was made to move into the role of Principal, Mitchell was my first choice of schools to lead due to the reputation of the dedicated staff and involved community.
Dr. Hite’s platform moving into the 2015-2016 school year is “a great school for each child in every neighborhood.” Our goal is to grow Mitchell into a model neighborhood school. This being the 100th year anniversary of the Mitchell school and the first year we are an official K-8 community, we are excited to start the school year off soaring with pride. Our work will be based in belief of the following…
“We give our children two gifts. One is roots. The other is wings.”
The Mitchell school community is on the rise. Upon entering the building, you will notice improvements to the entryway and main office areas. These changes were top priority at Mitchell to provide a welcoming and professional feel for families, students and community partners. The school environment will see many improvements over the course of the upcoming year and beyond due to the support of our staff and community partners.
As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child!” I am proud to share our village has expanded with the addition of highly qualified and dynamic staff including a climate manager, reading specialist, counselor and teachers to add to our already dedicated family of staff. In addition to partnerships already flourishing, we have established connections with Reading Olympics, Teen Authors, City Year, Special Olympics, the Free Library of Philadelphia and the Anti-Violence Partnership. And…wonderful news…our newly organized Mitchell library will be ready for students to check out books and utilize as research space during school hours by October 2015!
Over the summer, a three-year plan for academic achievement was collaboratively developed by various members of the Mitchell staff. This plan includes an increase in technology, inclusive practices for special needs students, programs for K-3 literacy, writing across all content areas, daily small group instruction, a Middle Years Academy and a school wide intervention program targeting individual student need.
A few important pieces of information for families are as follows:
The first day of school for students in grades 1-8 is September 8, 2015. The first day for Kindergarten is September 17, 2015. The day begins promptly at 8:25 AM. At that time, students will be welcomed into the auditorium to meet their teachers for the daily morning message. It is extremely important for all students to arrive to school on time daily. Dismissal for Kindergarten is 2:45 PM, grades 1-2 is 2:50 PM and grades 3-8 is 3:04 PM
MITCHELL BREAKFAST PROGRAM
Breakfast will be served prior the start of the school day. This will allow more time for instruction and support of school cleanliness. We encourage all students to join us for breakfast. Breakfast will be open in the lunchroom daily to all students in grades 1 through 8 between 7:45 AM and 8:15 AM. Kindergarten will continue to enjoy breakfast in the lunchroom with their teachers as a group at 8:25 AM daily.
PARTNERSHIPS WITH FAMILIES
Mitchell families are the most important members of our school community. There will be ongoing opportunities for families to visit Mitchell for showcases of scholar pride. A schedule will be sent home with your scholar on the first day of school regarding meeting times with myself, school leaders and teachers. Information regarding Mitchell policies and a school calendar will also be sent home on day one. To encourage your Mitchell scholar to have the best school year possible, please support the following:
