Search Engines & Directories

Search Engine

A search engine is a computer program that looks through databases of information about Web pages and reports any items that match your keywords. The search engine does not distinguish among different meanings of your keyword; it simply finds the word wherever it occurs. No human thought is involved in this type of search. Use a search engine when you are looking for a specific term.

Metasearch Engines

A metasearch engine has the ability to search many search engines at one time. Use a metasearch engine if you are having a problem finding information on a single search engine.

Directories

A directory is a list of sites that are selected and organized into categories by humans. Use a directory when you are searching for information about a general topic or if you are looking for a place to start your research.
