Extracurricular Activities

Masterman offers a range of co-educational, interscholastic sports on both the varsity and junior varsity level including basketball, cross-country, soccer, tennis, track and volleyball and participates on unified teams with other schools in gymnastics and swimming.

 

Masterman offers many co-curricular activities including musical ensembles, choir and other vocal ensembles, student government, dramatics, yearbook, newspaper, an award winning literary magazine, a nationally-ranked chess team, a championship mock trial team, competition in academic contests, science fairs, and many clubs.


 

 

 

8th Grade Graduation and Promotion Requirements


Students in the 8th grade will be promoted if they satisfy the following requirements:

  • Pass reading, mathematics, science and social studies;
  • Successfully complete a multidisciplinary project or a service learning project;
  • Score at or above the 26th percentile on the TerraNova test in both reading and mathematics or, if they have scored between the 20th and 25th percentile in both reading and mathematics, has met the following requirements:
    • Earns a letter grade of B or better in reading and mathematics;
    • Has passing scores on school-based reading and mathematics assessments;
    • Has an attendance rate of 90% or better;
    • Does not have any major conduct concerns; and
    • Consistently completes homework assignments.

Medical Forms

All new students, including 9th grade students that are returning to Masterman, must have a Physical Examination form completed by a healthcare provider.

 

Seventh grade students must have a Dental Examination form completed by a dentist. 

 

Students that require medication to be administered in school must have a MED-1 form completed by their healthcare provider. 

Home and School Association

The J.R. Masterman Home and School Association is a non-profit, non-sectarian and non-partisan organization for the promotion of cooperation between home, school and community. It coordinates efforts of staff and parents for the growth, education and development of children. It raises funds to further the goals of the school as determined by the association.

Athletic Participation Permission Forms

All students who wish to participate in an athletic activity must submit the forms listed below.

  1. Signed consent form for Interscholastic Athletic Particpation  and  PIAA Emergency Card  completed by parents/guardians
  2. Sports Physical Evaluation Form completed by student's health care provider

Graduation and Promotion Requirements

Outlined below are the School District of Philadelphia's Graduation and Promotion Requirements for 8th and 12th grade students. The full text of the School District of Philadelphia's Graduation and Promotion Requirements can be viewed online.

12th Grade Graduation and Promotion Requirements


Students in the 12th grade, who were first-time ninth graders in September of 2000, will graduate if they satisfy the following requirements:
  • Has earned a total of 23.5 credits including 4 in English, 3 in mathematics, 3 in science, 3 in social studies, 2 in world language, 1.5 in health and physical education, 2 in arts and humanities and 5 in electives. One of the required electives must be one of the following: mathematics, science, international baccalaureate, or advanced placement course.
  • Special admission schools, criteria-based programs and academies may predetermine the electives to require additional subject area credits in math, science or others; and
  • Successfully complete a multidisciplinary project or a service learning project.
