Mentally Gifted/Enrichment Program

Mentally Gifted/Enrichment Program

About The Program

Ferguson is proud of our MG/Enrichment Program.  We have consistently built up the program to include not only those students who have been identified as Mentally Gifted as determined by the School District of Philadelphia, but also to incorporate those students who, through teacher recommendation, would beneift from the project-based, cross-curricular activities.

Projects

Students explore an array of topics both on their interest level and topics that may be new to them.  Through year-long exploration, students gain an in-depth understanding of the topic.  Additionally, students strengthen critical skills needed to be successful such as:  higher order thinking, organization, research, oral presentation, time-management, writing, cooperative learning, etc.

Past projects have included:

  • Creating a professional sports team
  • Designing an automobile that will run on fuel other than gasoline
  • Debating
  • Planning, organizing, preparing, and serving a multi-course meal based on a theme
  • Designing a new bridge for Philadelphia

"Bridge To The Future"

During the 2008-09 school year, we were honored to partner with the National Building Museum and Turner Construction Company to present the "Bridge To The Future".

Using the National Building Museum's acclaimed hands-on program, Bridge Basics, students learned the architectural principles of five different types of bridges.  With this newly gained knowledge, students took on the role of "Urban Planners".  As the project write-up stated:

"This new entrance will represent all that is good in the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection.  To that end, it will be as signature of a landmark as the Golden Gate is to San Francisco or the Brooklyn Bridge is to New York."

End-Of-Year Gala

As a culminating event and to celebrate the students' achievements, the MG/Enrichment Program has an End-Of-Year-Gala.   Attended by faculty, parents, and distinguished guests, students present their project.

This is a wonderful event that show-cases all the hard work and effort that the students have put in all year.

The 2009-10 school year will represent the 6th Annual Gala!
