Dear Parent/Guardian:

As we approach the end of the school year, our schools begin to experience what’s known as “the Spring
Slide” and the “June Slump.” This is a troubling pattern in which student attendance rates start to drop in
May and worsen in June. We realize some absences are unavoidable, for example, due to health problems.
But, we also know that when students miss too much school regardless of the reason it can cause them to
fall behind academically. To ensure that your child receives the best education possible, I am asking you
to help us ensure the regular, on-time attendance of your child at school every day until the last day of
school. Please discuss with your children why attendance is so important for success in school, and about
continuing to put forth their best efforts in all of their classes. Instruction will continue and attendance
for students will be recorded on a daily basis by the District and calculated through the last day of school, June 22, 2016.
Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance at the end of the school year:
• Ensure your child goes to school every day unless they are truly sick.
• Avoid scheduling vacations or appointments when school is in session.
• Make sure your child keeps a regular bedtime.
• Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your child starts to become restless about going to
We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions or need more information please
contact your child’s school.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and support.

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Thank you for your excellent support during the recent Benchmark protocols.  We achieved a 93% participation rate, due in large part to your diligence in sending your children to school every day. Now we have the challenge of completing the Parent and Student surveys, scheduled from now through June 20th, so that the voices of the parents and students can be heard. The survey is available online at the School District Website: www.philasd.org/parent surveys. Your voice matters, so please complete the survey, and have your children do so as well. Any classes who achieve a 70% student participation rate, plus a 50% parent participation rate, will receive their choice of a water ice party or a pretzel party. More detailed information will be given in the calendar and letters we send home. Please encourage all the students to read at least 20 minutes every night so they can lead and succeed.

Congratulations to our Reading Olympics participants!. We had one team in first place and another in second place! They read, and they succeeded! A wonderful picture of the winning teams, and sponsors/chaperones Ms. Erickson and Ms. Dawson is in the Images Section.

Also, our next parent meeting for summer camp and reading program planning is on Monday, June 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. PLEASE COMPLETE THE PARENT SURVEY WHILE YOU ARE HERE FOR THE MEETING, OR WHEN DROPPING OFF OR PICKING UP YOUR CHILD.

Our student  attendance rate is 93.6%. We must reach 96% to be at the best level for student success. If we can reach 97% on any given day, we will distribute super-duper pencils. If we average 96% for June, we will have soft pretzels for all the students. Our May attendance was 94.1%. Students can only miss eight days of school to reach the 96% attendance goal. Let's all come to school, every day, on-time and in uniform!

Our website is full of  information you might need about Feltonville Intermediate, including uniform policies, Student Code of Conduct, Attendance Policy and required school district forms. Our School Climate Manager, Mr. Rosado, and our SISL, Ms. Gerena,  are here to help you with the above matters.

Our next major event is the Fifth Grade Awards & Recognition Ceremony on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria. To commemorate this Awards & Recognition Ceremony, please have the fifth graders dressed in dress pants and blazer for boys, and dress pants/skirt and blazer for girls. If this is not feasible, kindly have the students wear the school uniform. The next day, Tuesday, June 21st,  is the Fifth Grade Luncheon and procession outdoors, starting at 10:45 a.m. in the Cafeteria.

The last school day for students is Wednesday, June 22nd. The first school day of the new school year 2016-17 for students  is Wednesday, September 7, 2016. Faculty and Staff report on Thursday, September 1, 2016.

Our Faculty and Staff are ready to work with you and your child. We are all working hard teaching the curriculum, preparing for assessments, and remaining focused on our district outcomes of creating self directed learners, accountable citizens and effective communicators. Your assistance in our work is always appreciated. Please come out to the Recreation Center and help support our Field Day on this Monday, June 6, 2016!

I am excited to be your Principal and I am committed to helping your children succeed. I am available to help with any questions or concerns about your child's education. Please join us on Saturday, September 24th, 2016, at 9:00 a.m. at the Vaird Boys and Girls Club at 4800 Whitaker Avenue for the First Annual Walk for Education to benefit our Feltonville and Olney Schools, including Feltonville Intermediate School. Much needed materials and supplies will be purchased by the donations you provide when you sponsor your child to be in the walk. Sponsor forms will be available on Monday, June 6th, right outside the front door from 8:00 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. or from Ms. Gerena and Ms. Coates during the school day.

Our annual spring concert is this Thursday, June 9th at 10:00 a.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Please attend for a fine hour of enjoyable music.

We are now having outdoor admission procedures.  All students will be met by their teachers in the morning in the school yard, then enter our school at 8:25 a.m. Please do not bring your children to the school grounds until 8:15 a.m. The exit will be from the West Door on Wyoming Avenue for grade three, and from the school yard for grades four and five at 3:04 p.m. Thank you for your excellent cooperation in all of our school inititatives.

Remember to have your children Read to Lead and Succeed for at least 20 minutes every night.  Research shows that if you read while they are reading, their fluency and ability to focus will increase by more than one grade level per year.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. D. J. Anticoli,
