Message from Marilyn E. Quarterman

As the principal of the Ellwood School, it gives me pleasure to be in a unique position to serve in the Oak Lane community. The Oak Lane community is a hidden and wonderful secret in the Philadelphia School District.

As lush and beautiful as the physical surroundings are, so are the neighbors and parents of the Ellwood Community. The parents, neighbors, business owners, Oak Lane librarians and local Pastors radiate the beauty and calm spirit of the Community.

The beauty in the character of the people continues into the Ellwood School to include the teachers and staff.

Ellwood has much to celebrate, in addition to being in a unique community of nurturing and caring people. I'm happy to say that Ellwood made significant gains on the PSSA, we made AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the 2008-2009 school year. The teachers, staff, students and parents worked very hard last year in setting goals and achieving them.

This year Ellwood has a "Parent and Community Resource Center" located in Room 101, on the first floor. This center has been established to address the needs of the parents of our students and the school community. It will also serve as a resource and contact center for our community partners. Supports for parents in the form of resources, workshops and guides to help your children with their learning will be available in the Resource Center.

Shared Values

With the School District of Philadelphia and the Northwest Region, we at Ellwood Elementary School, share the belief that all children can learn at high levels.  We believe that, at Ellwood, we can provide children with a safe learning community in which all of its members participate as learners.  We believe that we can provide teachers with continuing opportunities to learn and share effective strategies that will empower them to teach students at the proficient level in literacy, math, science and social studies.  We want parents to be actively involved in the education of their children by effectively communicating with teachers, encouraging high academic expectations and assisting with and checking homework daily.
