Welcome to our school website!

We are the James  Dobson School: a small, high achieving K-8 public school moving through the Leader In Me process. Our School’s Vision is to  ‘Make it happen in Manayunk’ by living, loving, learning and leaving a legacy.  Our School’s Vision is To Empower J.D.S. students to be responsible, cooperative and respectful.

We are pleased to announce that Dobson has received the following grants:

  • from the Franklin Covey Foundation, the I Am A Leader Grant, to support the growth and leadership development of every student through the Leader In Me proccess.

  • from Healthy Newsworks: Support in publishing the student newspaper, The Fit Fin and connecting healthy living habits with personal growth and development.

  • from the Community Design Collaborative, In kind donations (valued at $25,000) to generate a blueprint for redesign of the schoolyard, including the creation of an outside science classroom and an outdoor performing arts area.

Our dedicated and professional faculty meets weekly to collaborate and share best practices that put the whole child at the center of our work as educators. Ms. Heyward has attained the prestigious National Board Certification for Teachers. Both Ms. McConnell and Ms. Fullam have been selected as Science Teaching Fellows through the Philadelphia Water Works program where they meet with colleagues throughout the city to design and implement multi-disciplinary project based curriculum for middle schoolers. Our music teacher, Ms. Tierney serves on the city-wide committee of music teachers working with the Philadelphia Orchestra that generates music curriculum for elementary school students.

Dobson’s student performance on the PSSA (standardized test) continues to exceed that of the city and state average. As we transition to the Common Core State Standards, we remain committed to meeting the needs of all students by providing a solid primary and intermediate education in order for each young person to realize his/her potential in high school and beyond- ready for college and career.

In addition to our high academic standards, we have an outstanding extra curricular program.  Our special activities include student council, safety patrol, school newspaper, performing arts, choir, dance team, instrumental music, and intramural and inter-scholastic sports, including:  basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball and tennis.

Dobson is fortunate to have an active and energetic Home & School Association.  Parents meet regularly; they plan special events, coordinate fundraisers and participate in decision-making.  The Home and School hosts events throughout the school year, from  the rising Kindergarten meet and greet in August, the annual Book Feast in November, the Winter Solstice celebration in December, through to ‘ Dobson Day’’ in June, with many, many bake sales in between, to make for a sweet school year!

It is truly an honor to serve as Dobson’s principal. Come check us out and see what all the excitement is about.
