Policies

Attendance

Charles Carroll High School encourages good attendance.  Coming to school each day is very important to the learning process.  Illness or family emergencies often necessitate a child to be absent from school.  Upon the student’s return to school, he/she must bring a note to the advisor from a parent or guardian explaining the nature of the absence.  Until such a note is received, a student’s absence will be counted as “unexcused”.  If the absence is of significant duration, please contact the school counselor so that arrangements for assignments and homework can be made.  All assignments missed, due to absence, are expected to be made up by the student.  Continual absences will result in a referral to truancy and/or family court.  Students may also receive an “F- attendance” grade for courses regardless of the student’s numerical academic grade.

Lateness

Students who arrive after 8:00 AM are counted as late.  Doors open at 7:35 AM.

7:40 - 7:55 AM

All students report to the student cafeteria for breakfast.
All students will enter building through the Edgemont St. entrance.  Late students will be assigned a detention to be served that afternoon.

Students who are late must make-up all work at the school detention that afternoon.  Repeated lateness will result in a referral to SMART (the Saturday alternative to suspension program.)

Cutting Class

Students who do not report to class and are not marked absent are considered to be cutting class. Violators are immediately assigned a detention to be served the first day they return to school. Repeat offenders will be subject to additional disciplinary action that may include a referral to the S.M.A.R.T. Program, suspension or a transfer to another school. Repeat offenders will not be invited to participate in special incentive activities and programs.

Early Dismissals

According to State Law, all appointments, including medical and dental appointments are to be scheduled after school hours.  Early dismissal will be granted only when (1) a parent/ guardian comes to school for the students (Telephone requests can not be honored), or (2) when the student presents an official signed appointment slip indicating date/time of appointment, address and phone of the doctor/dentist, and a signed note from the parent/guardian with a phone number to reach the parent/guardian for verification.  Students must present this documentation to the nurse prior to 8:15 AM on the day of the dismissal.

School Entrance Procedures

Students and all visitors to the school must enter through the Edgemont Street door.  Students must be in proper uniform and have their Identification card.  Students will scan their ID card and proceed through the metal detector.  All persons entering Charles Carroll High School are required to submit to a metal detector scan and a personal search, if necessary, to ensure that weapons are not brought into the building.  Bags and parcels may also be searched by means of metal detecting devices, by hand or otherwise.  Beepers, cellular telephones, laser pointers portable CD players and other electronic devices are banned from schools by state law and will be confiscated.  The school is not responsible for confiscated items.  Students found with weapons in or on their body or possession will be arrested and transferred from the school.
