Driver Training and Certification

Training and Certification

The Driver Training and Certification Department provides various training programs for school bus drivers under the direction of the Coordinator and two training instructors. The following programs are provided:

  • Initial training for new drivers who have had little or no prior experience. School bus driver candidates must complete the state mandated 20 hours of training (14 hours of classroom and 6 hours of in-bus instruction).  They will then be tested for their Commercial Drivers License by the Commonwealth  of Pennsylvania.
  • Recertification training for school bus drivers who must complete a 10 hour  course of instruction (7 hours of classroom review and 3 hours of in-bus instruction) in order to maintain their credentials. This course is mandated by  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania law, and it is required every 4 years.
  • Remedial training where appropriate, and for drivers involved in preventable accidents.

The Coordinator also schedules and reviews annual physical examinations for all School District bus and truck chauffeurs.

NOTE: All drivers must have a valid driver's license and obtain a physician's certificate, a certificate of completion  (20 hours of training), and a commercial driver's license (CDL) with an S endorsement, prior to being hired by the School District.  For more information on the process click here: Bus Chauffeur Requirements.
