6.3 Bus Chauffeur Job Specification

General Definition

This is student transport work operating a school bus for the School District of Philadelphia. Employees in this class provide transportation to students, on regularly scheduled routes, to and from school, to alternate school sites during the school day and after school hours and on school-sponsored field trips. Transportation may also be provided for school district employees from and to selected work sites. Work additionally involves the performance of minor daily preventive maintenance to vehicles as needed.

  1. Work is performed under the direction of a Transportation Supervisor.
  2. Typical Examples of Work (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
  3. Drives school buses on a number of assigned routes, picking up and discharging students at designated locations; transports students on field trips.
  4. Supervises or assists in the supervision of students' behavior while on the bus.
  5. Cleans and maintains vehicles; may assist transportation mechanics in the daily maintenance of buses which may include checking batteries, radiators and changing tires.
  6. Performs related work as required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Skill in the operation of motor vehicles having automatic transmission.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to perform light manual tasks if required by work assignment.
  • Ability to carry our written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with associates and students.

Minimum Acceptable Training & Experience (The following statement represents the minimum training and experience standards which will be used to admit or reject applicants for tests.)

Education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade.

Required Licenses

  • Possession of a valid proper class motor vehicle operator's license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prior to and during tenure of employment as a Bus Chauffeur.

    

(NOTE: Effective April 1, 1992, employees must obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with a passenger and a school bus endorsement and the removal of the air brake restriction, as a condition of employment.)
