2.1 Federal Mandates

 
1. Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 504:  A free appropriate public education shall be provided to each qualified individual with a disability within the recipient’s jurisdiction regardless of the nature or the disability. This includes the provision of regular or special education and related services designed to meet the individual need of the person with a disability as adequately as the needs of the non-disabled persons are met.

2. Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975: This act which is also known as P.L. 94-142 and is now known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 1990, provides for a beneficial program  based on individual needs. 

      a. FAPE: Free Appropriate Public Education for Special Education Pupils ages 3-21

      b. IEP: Individualized Education Program

      c. LRE: Least Restrictive Environment

3. No Child Left Behind Act 2001: Local Educational Agencies must give pupils attending schools identified for improvement, corrective action or restructuring, the opportunity to attend a better public school, which may include a public charter school, within the school district.  Transportation  must be provided to the new school.
