ELL Self-learning KitWith the goal of supporting the instruction of English Language Learners (ELLs), the Translation and Interpretation Center has developed an ELL Self-Learning Kit in multiple languages. This innovative multimedia tool is designed to enhance academic achievement in various subjects while reinforcing core English language instruction. We hope that this new product will be a powerful tool in serving the instructional needs of the District’s growing population of multilingual students and their families. The structure of the ELL Self-Learning Kit is simple. A lesson-specific keyword/phrase list is formatted with sound clips of pronunciation in English at slow and normal speeds, definitions in the respective native language, and examples of usage for those words or phrases. Each lesson is concluded by a self-administered quiz intended to measure mastery of the vocabulary as well as content comprehension. The kit can be used before, during and after lesson instruction, in tutoring sessions, or individually by the student at home. To introduce this new initiative, we have assembled a package containing a sample lesson and an ELL Self-Learning Kit associated with that lesson. Click the link below to watch a short lesson provided by Khan Academy (a free online educational resource website that covers much K-12 instructional content, especially Math and Science)(The lesson with Chinese subtitles is also available-Caution, you need to have an access to Youtube to view it). After watching, open the English/Chinese Lesson Keyword List developed specifically for that lesson. Each keyword is linked to a sound file which plays back its English pronunciation at slow and normal speeds. The equivalent word or phrase in Chinese is provided in the next column, and at the far right column is a more detailed explanation or definition in Chinese. To reinforce vocabulary acquisition and to solidify content mastery, the kit also contains a practice sheet and is concluded with a Self-Administered Quiz using the same multimedia approach. If you would like to develop similar lesson keyword lists based on your own lesson plan and wish them to be translated into different languages, we are here to help. All you have to do is send your request by using the online Translation Request Form.
