General Information

Application Deadline for 2010-2011 School Year: October 28, 2010 for maximum service (see letter for further explanation).

Supplemental Educational Services (SES) are additional academic instruction designed to increase the academic achievement of students in low performing schools. These services may include academic assistance such as tutoring, remediation and other educational interventions provided that such approaches are consistent with the content and instruction used by the School District of Philadelphia, and are aligned with the state's academic content standards. Supplemental Educational Services must be provided outside of the regular school day.

Purpose of Supplemental Educational Services

When students are attending Title I schools that have not made adequate yearly progress for three consecutive years, parents of eligible children will be provided opportunities to ensure that their children achieve at high levels. Supplemental Educational Services are a component of Title I reauthorized by the No Child Left Behind Act that will provide extra academic assistance for eligible children.

Who is Eligible for These Services?

Eligible students are all students from low-income families who attend Title I schools that are in their third year or more of School Improvement, School Improvement II, Corrective Action I or Corrective Action II. If the funds are not available to provide Supplemental Educational Services to each eligible student whose parent requests those services, the District must give priority to providing services to the lowest achieving eligible students. The District must provide a list of state-approved providers so that parents can have a full set of options to find whatever services their child needs to achieve.

The School District of Philadelphia mailed the SES Notice of Availability and parent packet directly to the homes of eligible (low-income) students. If you did not receive this letter in the mail, and think your child may be eligible, please go to your child's school (which must be one of the schools in the list below) and ask for the Request for Supplemental Educational Services (SES Eligibility Status Form. After you complete this form at the school, the school will fax the form to the SES Team. Once we have received this form, someone from the SES Team will call you to discuss your child's eligibility.

Schools that are required to provide Supplemental Educational Services must:

  • Annually notify parents of the availability of those services, including a list of state-approved providers.
  • Help parents select a provider, if such help is requested.
  • Enter into an agreement with a provider that includes goals and a timetable for improving the student's achievement, regular Progress Reports, and a provision for termination if the provider fails to meet the goals, timetables and payment terms.
