The Four Kensington High Schools and New High Schools Lottery is an opportunity for students who are currently enrolled in eighth-grade and would like to apply to the following schools for ninth-grade.

Pre-K Registration

Pre-K Registration began on December 15.  
 
Parents and guardians are encouraged to register students for Pre-K programs as soon as possible.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten Registration began on January 21 and will remain open until May 30.

Your child must be five years old on or before September 1, 2014 in order to register for kindergarten.

Please note:  The School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Student Enrollment and Placement will offer families from across the city the opportunity to enroll their children in kindergarten at Powel Elementary School beginning on March 17.

Parents can submit an application to the Office of Student Enrollment and Placement located at 440 N. Broad Street, Suite 111 Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-5:00 PM or to the main office at Powel Elementary School during school hours.  Applications will be accepted March 17 - April 14 and are available online and at the school.

Families will be notified about the status of their application during the week of April 28, after an electronic lottery is run to fill the 40 kindergarten seats available at the school.  Sibling preference will be applied.  Transportation will not be provided for students accepted to Powel.

Elementary and Middle School Selection Process

The deadline to submit an Elementary and Middle School Selection application was Friday, January 17 at 5 p.m.

The Elementary and Middle School Selection Process is used to apply to Special Admission middle schoolsCitywide Admission middle and elementary schools, and Neighborhood elementary and middle schools with available space.

Below is a timeline of events as we move forward with processing each student’s application.

Timeline

February:  Applications are processed.

March: Schools evaluate applicants and auditions are held for special admission schools that require an audition.  Lotteries are conducted and placement reports are reviewed for accuracy.

April: First round determination letters are mailed to students.

High School Selection

High School Selection

The deadline to submit a High School Selection application was December 6 at 5 p.m.  The School District of Philadelphia is no longer accepting applications. 

Below is a timeline of events as we move forward with student placement.

Timeline

December-January: High schools review all applications, hold interviews and auditions, and make selection decisions.  If a student meets the admissions criteria for a Special Admission High School, the school will contact the student by phone to schedule an audition or interview. 

February:  Lotteries are conducted for citywide admission schools and programs and placement reports are reviewed for accuracy.

March: First round placement letters are generated. Students that receive multiple acceptances decide which school they will attend. Vacated seats are offered to students on a school's waitlist.

April: Second round placement letters are generated.

Notification Process

First round placement letters were sent during the week of March 10.  District students will receive placement letters from the school they currently attend.  Non-District students will receive placement letters in the mail.

Each letter will identify the status of application for the school/s the student applied to.  Parents should closely review the next steps and instructions provided on the placement letter to ensure that their student’s placement is completed correctly.  

Status Details and Next Steps

NO APPROVALS (DISTRICT/CHARTER/PAROCHIAL STUDENTS)

If no approvals are shown on your child's placement letter, he/she will automatically be enrolled at his/her neighborhood school.


SINGLE APPROVAL INSTRUCTIONS

(DISTRICT/CHARTER/PAROCHIAL STUDENTS) 

If one approval is shown on your child's placement letter, you have the following options:

1.  If you decide to accept the school's approval your child will be automatically enrolled at that school for the 2014-15 school year.  You are not required to return the letter to the Office of Student Enrollment and Placement if you accept a school's approval to enroll.   

2.  Please be advised that if your child's status indicates that he/she was placed on a waiting list at another school, and you decide to accept a school's approval to enroll, your child's name will be removed from the waiting list because an enrollment decision has been made.3.  If your child's status indicates that he/she has been placed on a school's waiting list, you have the option to decline the other school's approval and remain on the waiting list of that school.

MULTIPLE APPROVAL INSTRUCTIONS

FOR PARENTS/LEGAL GUARDIANS OF CURRENT SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA STUDENTS:

1.  If more than one approval is shown on your child's placement letter (a multiple approval), you have the following options:     

     a.  You can select the school you would like your child to attend by placing a check in the box next to the name of a school where he/she has been conditionally approved. Please be advised that if your child's status indicates that he/she was placed on a waiting list at another school, your child's name will be removed from the waiting list once you choose to enroll at a conditionally approved school.

     -or-      

     b.  If your child's status indicates that he/she has been placed on a school's waiting list, you have the option to decline all of the approval(s) to the other school(s) and remain on the waiting list. 

2.  After making your decision, please sign and return your child's placement letter to the counselor at the school he/she currently attends.  All forms must be submitted by Friday, March 28, 2014.  

3.  Once this form has been submitted, changes will not be accepted.  

4.  Please be advised that if a response is not received by March 28, 2014, all approvals will be forfeited and your child will automatically be enrolled at his/her neighborhood school.

FOR PARENTS/LEGAL GUARDIANS OF CURRENT NON-SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA STUDENTS (CHARTER, PAROCHIAL, PRIVATE OR OTHER):

1.  If more than one approval is shown on your child's placement letter (a multiple approval), you have the following options:     

     a.  You can select the school you would like your child to attend by placing a check in the box next to the name of a school where he/she has been conditionally approved. Please be advised that if your child's status indicates that he/she was placed on a waiting list at another school, your child's name will be removed from the waiting list once you choose to enroll at a conditionally approved school.

     -or-     

     b.  If your child's status indicates that he/she has been placed on a school's waiting list, you have the option to decline all of the approval(s) to the other school(s) and remain on the waiting list. 

2.  After making your decision, please sign and return it to the Office of Student Enrollment and Placement.  All forms must be submitted by Friday, March 28, 2014.  

3.  Once this form has been submitted, changes will not be accepted.

1.  If you wish to decline a school's approval made through this process, please check the appropriate box on the placement letter and immediately return the letter to: SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA, OFFICE OF STUDENT ENROLLMENT AND PLACEMENT, 440 N. BROAD STREET, SUITE 111, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19130.

2.  If your child's status indicates that he/she has been placed on a school's waiting list and you wish to decline that school's approval and remain on the waiting list of other school(s), please check the appropriate box and immediately return the letter to: SCHOOL DISTRICT OF PHILADELPHIA, OFFICE OF STUDENT ENROLLMENT AND PLACEMENT, 440 N. BROAD STREET, SUITE 111, PHILADELPHIA, PA 19130.
