School Readiness, Mandated Screenings and Exams

Students attending a public or non-public school are required to have screenings and exams, as indicated. School nurses and school nurse practitioners will do screenings, as needed.  However, your primary health care providers are the best persons to do the exams since they can provide follow-up care. If you would like help in finding a family health care provider, a vision care provider, a dentist or an insurance provider, or you have other concerns about your child's health, please contact the school nurse.

Health Care Centers

If you live in Philadelphia, you can get high-quality health care at one of Philadelphia's health care centers. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health's (PDPH) Health Care Centers accept Medicare, Medical Assistance, and most health insurance and HMO plans.  If you do not have insurance, you will be billed on a sliding scale based on your family size and income.  Even if you do not have any income or health insurance, you will still receive high-quality health care. See the Philadelphia Department of Public Health's website for more information.

Immunizations

Students attending a public or non-public school are required by the Philadelphia Department of Health to have the following immunizations, as indicated, before the start of each grade. Visit the link below for more information.

School Nurses • More than just first aid

Students learn best when they are healthy. School nurses are dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of students and staff in school and to helping students to develop good health habits that will last a lifetime. School nurses help to identify and provide support for health conditions that adversely impact learning.

How do school nurses support learning? School nurses do all the following and more:

  • Assess vision, hearing, growth and other conditions that may interfere with learning.
  • Develop and implement health plans to protect and maintain the safety and health of students.
  • Increase students' self care skills.
  • Teach students to be responsible consumers of health care.
  • Promote improvements in the school's safety, environment and climate.
  • Assist families to obtain health insurance and health care for their children.
  • and more...
Philadelphia school nurses are certified as educational specialists by the Commonwealth of Pennslvania. They must also be registered nurses (RN), have a bachelor's degree, and complete additional graduate level education in school nursing and school law.
