WHAT IS PIL? HOW ARE YOU AFFECTED?

The Act 45 law was passed in Pennsylvania requiring all assistant principals, principals, assistant superintendents and superintendent's to earn 180 continuing professional educational hours (Act 48 PIL) within a five a year cycle. Depending on whether you became a school leader before 2008, determines how you will be affected.

AFTER JANUARY 1, 2008....

  • Anyone who became an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent or superintendent AFTER January 1, 2008 is required to complete the Principals Induction Program within five years of their date of hire.
  • The Principals Induction Program is comprised of 150 credit hours of targeted leadership professional development. Two (2) required courses are the National Institute for School Leadership (NISL) Course 1 and Course 4. You may take NISL's Course 2 and 3 to complete the other 30 credit hours or you make take any other PIL approved course.
BEFORE JANUARY 1, 2008
  • Anyone who became an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent or superintendent BEFORE January 1, 2008 is required to complete 180 Act 48 PIL hours within five years of their date of hire. You can only earn Act 48 PIL hours by completing courses offered by PA Inspired Leadership or by completing PDE-approved courses offered by other providers such as IUs, colleges and professional organizations. You are not required to take the Principals Induction Program, but you may take it.

The School District of Philadelphia will eventually offer all four NISL courses and also other PIL/PDE approved courses in the near future.

* Courses offered by PA Inspired Leadership are free of charge for tuition and for materials.

** Providers offering PDE-approved courses may charge for tuition and materials

***If you take any of the NISL courses, Course 1 must be taken first.
