Indoor Environmental Quality Program

Overview

The Importance of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)

Poor Indoor Environmental Quality can impact the comfort and health of students and staff, which, in turn, can affect concentration, attendance, and  student performance.

The School District of Philadelphia is committed to enhancing our students’ learning experience by providing a safe and healthful learning and working environment.

The School District of Philadelphia and stakeholders have designed an IEQ Management Plan that will help monitor and   improve the quality of the indoor environments of school buildings.

The objectives of this IEQ Management Plan are to:

· Prevent the occurrence of IEQ-related issues at schools with routine maintenance activities,  periodic building evaluations and inspections, and IEQ-specific policies.

· Respond to IEQ-related concerns and problems in a thorough and prompt manner, and effectively communicate the progress of investigations and their   resolution to all interested parties.

· Create an IEQ problem reporting mechanism so that school occupant concerns are listened to, tracked and solved.

· Provide building occupants with the tools and  resources they need to identify and solve IEQ  problems on their own at the school-based level as much as possible.

· Reduce the levels of indoor air pollutants through educational outreach to building occupants.

· Ensure properly functioning and maintained heating and ventilating which will promote a comfortable and healthy learning and working   environment.

· Provide IEQ Certification Workshop for IEQ  Coordinators.  This certification is based upon the EPA’s Tools for Schools Program and will be specifically developed by the IEQ design committee.
