Communities In Schools of Philadelphia, Inc. (CISP) is an affiliate of Communities In Schools, Inc. (CIS), the largest dropout prevention program in the country. Founded in 1977, CIS operates in 25 states and the District of Columbia, serving 1.3 million elementary and secondary students in 3,250 schools. CIS provides services to students in their schools, drawing primarily on existing community resources. In 1986, CISP was created out of the Office of Vocational Education as the “right arm” for the School District of Philadelphia (SDP). CISP, working in close partnership with the SDP, has grown steadily and annually serves more than 10,000 students in Philadelphia, Kindergarten through post-high-school, through more than 25 separate programs that provide services to in-school and out of school youth. Combining efforts of dedicated staff and strong community and school-based partnerships, CISP programs now yield an 85% graduation rate for eligible seniors. Our specialized programmatic approach incorporates the following CIS BASICS to provide support to Philadelphia’s youth, because every child needs and deserves:
Credit Recovery provides an opportunity for students to earn credit and a passsing grade in a previously failed course. Students who repeat this course must receive a passing grade.
EducationWorks (EW) in partnership with the School District of Philadelphia operates the Classroom Academic Assistant Program (CAAP). EducationWorks Corps members assist teachers in 9th grade intensive and strategic classrooms supporting English and Math. This is done by offering focused, additional support to 9th grade students rostered in the English and Math Intervention classrooms under the direction of the classroom teacher. Members provide individualized or small group tutoring, classroom and homework assistance Mondays through Fridays. We collaborate with students, parents, guardians, and caregivers by empowering them to develop support networks within the home, school, and community to improve their grades, assessment scores, and attendance.
ICLE (International Center for Leadership in Education) has a wealth of experience in assisting schools and districts in implementing organizational changes that translate into world-class curriculum, instruction, and assessment systems. This organization works with our school district to assist our schools with developing and implementing small learning communities. It is our belief that small learning communities established within our schools help our students achieve at higher levels, value learning and see a connection between school and their future.
The overall purpose of Summer Learning and More (S.L.A.M.) is to provide appropriate skill development in core subject areas and enrichment opportunities. The end result is to yield an increase in student achievement and an increase in promotion and graduation rates.
Flocabulary is an award-winning vocabulary and reading program that combines original hip-hop music with research-based curricular materials to engage students and boost their reading skills. The program has been successfully used in thousands of schools nationwide - including right here in Philadelphia for summer school as well as several schools throughout the district. In fact, the program has been credited with boosting PSSA scores.
Student Success Centers are designed to be a holistic approach to assist students in creating a post-secondary plan and providing and coordinating services and resources to help them to achieve their post-secondary goals. The Student Success Center initiative has provided services to 14,124 youth since its inception.This initiative focuses on five major areas:
Summer Bridge occurs during the summer for our students. Summer Bridge is designed to help Empowerment Schools students who were moving up to key grades, such as 9th grade, make smooth transitions,
Teach For America (TFA) is an American non-profit organization that aims to eliminate educational inequity by enlisting the nation's most promising future leaders to teach for two or more years in low-income communities throughout the United States. The organization aspires for these "corps members" to gain the insight and added commitment to tackle the root causes of America's achievement gap throughout their lives.
Voyager Expanded Learning is a leading provider of in-school core reading programs, reading and math intervention programs and professional development programs for school district throughout the United States. Voyager has delivered its programs to more than 1,000 school district, including Philadelphia, resulting in dramatically improved student performance. |
