Summary

The Teacher of the Visually Impaired works with visually impaired children at all grade levels in a variety of settings and employs the special techniques, equipment, and materials relevant to this special education group. It is necessary that the teacher has knowledge of the eye conditions found in such children; knowledge of the adaptations needed for these children; and the ability to read and write Braille. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired prepares Individualized Education
Programs and performs related work as required.

Position Requirements

Each applicant must:

1a. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate teach the Visually Impaired,

or

b. Present a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Intern Certificate to teach the Visually Impaired,

or

c. Present a current instructional certificate to teach the Visually Impaired from a state other than Pennsylvania. If you are not certified in Pennsylvania, you should immediately contact the Bureau of Teacher Preparation and Certification to begin the evaluation process at: 333 Market Street, Harrisburg, PA 17126-0333, or by phone at: 717-787-3356.

2. Have a knowledge of Contracted Braille with an 80% profiency.  The interview process will require you to transcribe a short passage using a manual (nonelectric) braillewriter.

Note:   In order to be consider for this position, you are required to provide the following documents. Candidates failing to present these documents may not be added to the eligibility lists and will not be appointed.

  • A copy of your certification
  • A copy of your Bachelor’s degree or a copy of your college transcript which shows the date you earned your bachelor’s degree
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A copy of current clearances, or proof that you have submitted for such clearances (PA Child Abuse and Criminal Background Check)

Note:  The Department of Education will not grant the teaching certificate necessary for this position to individuals who have been  convicted of certain crimes or who have a record of child abuse.
