Substitute Teacher Notice

The School District is accepting applications for PA Certified Substitutes in Dance, Vocal Music and Instrumental Music, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Special Ed and Spanish ONLY. Please call 215-400-7827 to obtain the documents required.

We do not currently have a need in any other subjects at this time.  Please continue to view this website for updates.

How do I become a School District of Philadelphia Substitute Teacher?

Step 1. Document Completion

In order to further your application for Substitute Teacher you need to possess and complete various documents. 

What documents do I need?

Step 2. Substitute Teacher Training Program

The Substitute Teacher Training Program is an online Substitute Assessment program.  The cost of this program is $39.95 plus shipping, payable online by credit card, check or money order. The test may only be taken over the Internet. You will need to successfully complete this program and obtain a passing score of at least 85 to become a School District of Philadelphia Substitute Teacher.

Find out more information about the Substitute Teacher Training Program. If you possess a Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate, you are exempt from taking the Substitute Teacher Training Program. Completion of this program does not guarantee placement as a substitute teacher.

Step 3. Employment Processing

Once you have completed step 1 and 2 you will need to contact the Substitute Services Unit (215-400-SUBS) for a processing appointment. Processing sessions take place once a month.

Please bring  all original completed  documents to the processing session. If you fail to submit all your documents you will be invited to return to the next processing session.

Step 4. Orientation

At the completion of the employment processing you will be invited to an *Orientation session ONLY if you have all of the required items at the time of employment processing.

Upon successful completion of the Orientation you will gain access to the AESOP system, the School District of Philadelphia's automated substitute placement system.
