Summary

Lead Food Service Worker  (Formerly Senior Food Service Worker)

Under the direction of a Food Services District Supervisor, the Lead Food Service Worker performs work in the satellite food service operation in the School District.  The Lead Food Service Worker orders, receives, stores, reconstitutes and distributes pre-packaged, prepared lunches at a school location, and may supervise a small crew of Food Service Aides engaged in the unpacking, heating and serving of these meals.  The Lead Food Service Worker is also responsible for sanitary conditions and ay clean equipment, kitchen and serving areas.

Important to the work are several record keeping functions related to School District policy and procedures and the regulations of the National School Lunch Program.  These include reviewing student applications for meal categories; accounting for lunch tickets purchased and used; accounting of the number of meals served and the monies collected, and preparing a weekly operations report.  The employee performs related duties as required.

Essential Functions

  • Orders meals from the Satellite Control Desk based on menu popularity and student participation history; receives and oversees the storage of delivered products; supervises and participates in unpacking and counting of hot or cold pack meals; counts milk cartons as well as breakfast and lunch packs; checks exterior of breakfast and lunch packs to ascertain that they have arrived in acceptable condition; reports damages or otherwise unacceptable products to the Satellite Control Desk.
  • Places trays of pre-cooked hot lunch packs in the oven and heats for stipulated time period; places packaged lunches on wire racks and food and beverages on serving counters; portions servings of desserts into containers.
  • Reviews student applications for meal category in order to set up record keeping; prepares and maintains a variety of records including the number of meals served.
  • Serves food to students and staff in a cafeteria; handles POS and POS rosters; performs cashiering duties; operates POS computer terminal; counts the number of food items prepared and records this information in a journal.
  • Cleans preparation, service and storage areas; washes and sanitizes lunchroom tabletops, storage shelves, racks, trays and other utensils; cleans the oven, refrigerator and other appliances; sweeps the floor of the Food Services area.
  • Removes trash from kitchen area only.

 

Position Requirements

Examination Entrance Requirements
Each applicant must:

1.  have education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade;  In order to be considered for this position, you must attach a copy of your diploma or GED certificate , coursework certificate, or a transcript to your application.

                                                        AND

2.  have completed two years of full time, paid experience in a large food service establishment serving over 300 meals daily. In order to be considered for this position, you must provide details of such experience on your application.

                                                       OR

2a.   have successfully completed the following accredited college level coursework:

  • Introduction to School Food Service; and
  • Servesafe Sanitation Program

In order to be considered for this position, you must attach a copy of your coursework, transcript and servesafe certificate to your application.

Hiring Requirements

These documents are valid for one year after the date of issuance. 

Candidates failing to present these documents will not be appointed.

In the event this position is reannounced or put on continuous filing, candidates who wish to retake the examination may file a new application. However, they will not be allowed to retake the examination until at least 90 days after the date on which they took or had a review of the examination. (We will use the latest date in calculating the 90 days.)

Scope of the Examination
Written Examination                               Weight: 50%

The written portion of the examination is designed to evaluate the candidate’s ability in the areas of arithmetical calculations and the preparation of reports.Also, the candidate’s knowledge of basic food service practices, sanitation and safety will be evaluated. Minimum required score: 70.00

Oral Examination                                    Weight: 50%

The oral portion of the examination is designed to evaluate the candidate knowledge of food service planning and coordination, and the use of equipment and safety and sanitation procedures. Also, the candidate's ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships will be evaluated.  Minimum required score: 70.00

Eligible List and Appointment

Three eligible lists will be established as a result of the examination.

Placement on eligible lists will be determined by job status as of the date of the administration of the first portion of the examination.

  1. The Departmental List will contain the names, in rank order, of those successful candidates who are in positions covered by the Local 634 contract, and are employed in the department in which a vacancy exists.
  2. The Interdepartmental List will contain the names, in rank order, of all other successful candidates who are employed by the School District of Philadelphia.
  3. The Open Competitive List will contain the names, in rank order, of all other successful candidates.

Appointments to vacancies will be made, in rank order, beginning with the Departmental List. When the Departmental List is exhausted, vacancies will be filled from the Interdepartmental List. When the Interdepartmental List is exhausted, vacancies will be filled from the Open Competitive List.

Eligible List and Appointment

The names of those candidates who receive a final score of 70.00 or better in the examination will be placed on an eligible list for the position in score order. These names will be merged into any existing or subsequent eligible list for the position in score order. Candidates will be hired for position vacancies in score order from names on the eligible list at the time of hiring.

If a certificate is required for this position, all candidates must present the original of the required certificate at the time of hiring. Failure to present any required documents will result in the candidate being passed over for hiring.

If the hiring of a bilingual candidate best meets the needs of a school or work location, the School District of Philadelphia reserves the right to give priority to the hiring of bilingual candidates. Current School District of Philadelphia needs for bilingual appointments include applicants who speak fluent English and fluent Spanish, Vietnamese, Khmer, Chinese, or Russian. The hiring of all bilingual candidates will be preceded by the satisfactory completion of a language proficiency screening process in the qualifying languages.
