Summary

Under the immediate supervision of the bus chauffeur, school principal or designee, the bus attendant monitors the activities of special education students while on buses en route to and from school.  Employees in this class prepare students to board buses; ensure that students are in their seats; maintain order on buses; render other assistance when necessary.  Work also involves insuring the student’s well-being and safety while traveling on the bus.  Additionally, the bus attendant may be required to assist the teacher in a variety of classroom activities such as distributing and collecting classroom materials, aiding students with personal habits and self care skills; reinforcing classroom routines and activities and performing related duties as required.

Position Requirements

l.  Have completed an associate’s degree program at an accredited college or university.  In order to be considered for this position, you must attach a copy of your degree to your application.

                                                            OR

2.  Have completed 60 credit hours in a matriculated status at an accredited college or university.  In order to be considered for this position, you must provide a copy of the official transcript to your application.

                                                             OR

3.  Have education equivalent to the completion of the twelfth school grade and pass the examination required to be        considered highly qualified under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. In order to be considered for this position, you must attach a copy of your high school diploma to your application.

Hiring Requirement

All Candidates must present, at the time of hiring, A Valid Pennsylvania Criminal Record Check, a completed Pennsylvania Child Abuse Check, FBI Clearance, an approved physical.  Please refer to our website address for the link to FBI Clearance www.pa.cogentid.com

These documents are valid for one year after the date of issuance. 

Candidates failing to present these documents will not be appointed.

In the event this position is reannounced or put on continuous filing, candidates who wish to retake the examination may file a new application. However, they will not be allowed to retake the examination until at least 90 days after the date on which they took or had a review of the examination. (We will use the latest date in calculating the 90 days.)

SCOPE OF THE EXAMINATION

Written Examination - For Candidates who are not highly qualified under the No Child Left Behind Act or do not hold an Associate's degree or 60 credits.    QUALIFYING ONLY:  PASS/FAIL

The written examination is a multiple choice exam designed to measure areas such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, and mathematical ability. Candidates must be successful in this examination to be considered for the oral examination.

Oral Examination - For All Candidates

WEIGHT:  100%

The oral examination consists of a series of questions designed to measure areas such as the candidate’s knowledge of effective bus classroom procedures, effective positive behavior support strategies, as well as those personal attitudes and attributes which would best predict success in this position.                                                                                                                                                                                                              Minimum required score: 70.00

NOTE:  Credit for seniority (.33 per year) will be added to the final scores of successful candidates who are in positions covered by the LOCAL 1201.

ELIGIBLE LISTS AND APPOINTMENTS

Three eligible lists will be established as a result of the examination.

Placement on eligible lists will be determined by job status as of the date of the administration of the first portion of the examination.

1.  The Departmental List will contain the names, in rank order, of those successful candidates who are in positions covered by the Local 1201 contract and are employed in the department in which a vacancy exists.

2.  The Interdepartmental List will contain the names, in rank order, of all other successful candidates who are employed by the School District of Philadelphia.

3.  The Open Competitive List will contain the names, in rank order, of all other successful candidates.

Appointments to vacancies will be made, in rank order, beginning with the Departmental List.  When the Departmental List is exhausted, vacancies will be filled from the Interdepartmental List.  When the Interdepartmental List is exhausted, vacancies will be filled from the Open Competitive List.

If a certificate is required for this position, all candidates must present the original of the required certificate at the time of hiring.  Failure to present any required documents will result in the candidate being passed over for hiring. 

If the hiring of a bilingual candidate best meets the needs of a school or work location, the School District of Philadelphia reserves the right to hire the first such candidate whose name appears on the eligible list established as a result of this examination.  Current School District of Philadelphia needs for bilingual appointments include applicants who speak fluent English and fluent Spanish, Vietnamese, Chinese, or Russian.   The hiring of all bilingual candidates will be preceded by the satisfactory completion of a proficiency examination in the qualifying languages.
