The Cosmetology - Barbering Programs are dedicated to preparing students for current and emerging careers in the Hair & Beauty Industry. Cosmetology students learn state-of-the-art hair cutting, coloring, weaving and sculpting, nail technology and skin care. Barbering students learn men’s hairstyling, shaping and beard management procedures and all aspects of the barber industry. These programs combine crucial elements of art, science, technical, interpersonal and communication skills and entrepreneurship. To adequately prepare students for employment in the Hair & Beauty Industry, these programs adhere to all ethical and professionals standards of the industry. Under the supervision of licensed and credentialed instructors, students participate in the actual operation of school-based salons or barber shops and cater to real clients to gain the customer service and management skills required to become professionals in this exciting industry. In addition, students intern in salons and barber shops to gain valuable on-the-job training and experience.

Students who complete the Cosmetology Program are prepared to take the Pennsylvania State Board of Cosmetology Examination to become licensed cosmetologists. Likewise, students completing the Barber Program take the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners Examination to become licensed barbers. These programs afford students the opportunity to obtain an industry license and their high school diploma. The programs include three years of instruction that begin in the tenth grade.

Students enrolled in this program are exposed to many facets of the fashion design industry, including designing and preparing a collection for the school’s annual Fashion Show, fabric and accessory design. Local designers, merchants and entrepreneurs are invited into the classroom to share their experiences. To gain valuable industry experience, students intern in a variety of industry–related career areas to obtain a real-world view of the careers the fashion design industry has to offer. This program includes three years of instruction that begins in the tenth grade.

This program is articulated with the Art Institute of Philadelphia and gives students who complete the program the opportunity to opt out of entry-level courses when they enroll at the Art Institute.
