MATE Pennsylvania Regional ROV ChallengeMATE Pennsylvania Regional ROV ChallengeAbout MATE
The MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education) Center's mission is to help prepare America's future workforce for ocean-related occupations. The MATE Center utilizes information from employers to improve and develop educational programs with a focus on marine technology. The Center focuses on community college education and the creation of strong links between community colleges and high schools, technical schools, 4 year institutions, research institutions, and industry, government, military, and labor organizations.
History
In early 2009, The School District of Philadelphia's Secondary Robotics Initiative led by the Robotics Education Specialist, Velda Morris, partnered with the MATE Center to begin a collaboration to provide access to the next exciting cross-disciplinary STEM urban youth program. In order to prepare robotics educators for the challenging world of underwater exploration, the Secondary Robotics Initiative (SRI) submitted two proposals to attend the MATE summer program. The proposals were accepted and in July of 2009 a teacher from Meehan Middle School and one from Dobbins High School attended the professional development in Monterey, California to become the leading teacher trainers for the program. With the leading teachers on board, the district's SRI next move was to plan for the launch of the 2010 MATE Pennsylvania ROV Challenge. In order to prepare for the competition, Velda Morris met with other MATE regional coordinators in Biloxi, Mississippi and gained insight on successfully preparing teams and teachers. The competition began to take shape and solicitation for sponsorship lead to invaluable partnerships. Villanova University's Department of Mechanical Engineering agreed to take the role as lead host for the competition in November 2009 and promised not only the use of world class facilities but also faculty, staff and student volunteers. The agreement strengthened the long-standing collaborative relationship between Villanova University's College of Engineering and The School District of Philadelphia's Secondary Robotics Initiative. The 2010 MATE competition highlights the use of ROV's in underwater investigations. ROV's will be constructed for various tasks such as gathering data samples, removing marine debris, and search and rescue missions. The MATE program will not only prepare students for hands-on design but also STEM disciplines in college and becoming members of the lucrative technology workforce.
Student ROV Competitions
The MATE Center coordinates an international student ROV competition and a network of 17 regional ROV contests that take place across U.S. and in Canada, Hong Kong, and Scotland. Student teams from middle schools, high schools, home schools, community colleges, and universities participate in the events, which consist of different "classes" that vary depending on the sophistication of the ROVs and the mission requirements. In addition to being fun and educational, these competitions connect students and educators with employers and working professionals from marine industries, highlight marine-related career opportunities, and promote the development of technical, problem solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. The following is a list of MATE's ROV competitions.
About MATE Pennsylvania Regional ROV Challenge
MATE Pennsylvania Regional ROV Challenge is launching the first ROV challenge in the tri-state area. Villanova University's College of Engineering and the School District of Philadelphia's Secondary Robotics Initiative are partnering to bring additional STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) opportunities to more than thirty middle, high school and college teams from the east coast. Video Ray, the United States Navy League, and the United States Naval Academy have joined us to inspirie our youth to learn more about the maritime career fields via MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education).
