What is the GEAR UP Grant?
This discretionary grant program is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follows the cohort through high school.
Types of Projects
GEAR UP offers state and partnership grants.
State grants are competitive six-year matching grants that must include both an early intervention component designed to increase college attendance and success and raise the expectations of low-income students and a scholarship component.
Partnership grants are competitive six-year matching grants that must support an early intervention component and may support a scholarship component designed to increase college attendance and success and raise the expectations of low-income students.
GEAR UP in the School District of Philadelphia
Currently the School District of Philadelphia manages two GEAR UP grants.
The Partnership Grant is in its final school year providing college and career access services to seniors in 6 district high schools.
The CRCC Project is in its second year providing services to current 7th and 8th graders in 42 district middle schools.
GEAR UP Summer Programs
Summer Programs for Current 7th Grade GEAR UP Students
The Urban League of Philadelphia/ TriZen, LLC. facilitates a two-week summer program for rising 8th grade (current 7th grade) students, designed to provide Academic Enrichment, Career Exposure and Leadership Development. A STEM-focused theme has been adopted to enhance problem-solving and social skills and expose students to STEM careers. Through the facilitation of interactive activities (social recreation is intertwined in the curriculum of each area of focus), students will be engaged mentally, socially and physically throughout the program. Click here for the application. In order to participate you must be a students at one of the 42 GEAR UP middle schools in Philadelphia.
