Campus Parks
The School District of Philadelphia, working in partnership with the City, community –based organizations, non-profit,corporate and neighborhood agencies, to create educationally and socially vibrant outdoor spaces at schools throughout the District. Students must have access to outdoor facilities that are stimulating, safe, and conducive to an array of appropriate uses. No longer will school campuses consist entirely of asphalt lots that are designed for car parking, not student recreation and learning.
This Initiative will require the active participation of all sectors of Philadelphia. The School District will provide a sizable portion of the overall funding. We will work closely with students, teachers, parents, and local community partners to create outdoor wildlife habitats and sanctuaries, peace gardens for conversation, reading and reflection, mini-parks for outdoor chess and backgammon, mini-soccer fields, reading areas with gazebos and benches, and outdoor theatres . Each school that receives funding for a park must assemble an Advisory Committee with representation from all local school and community stakeholders, with a priority placed on student participation in the decision-making process, Service Learning, and student run entrepreneurial businesses.
