Retirement & Disability Retirement Life Insurance

Normal Retirement:

When you retire from the School District of Philadelphia, you may be eligible to have your Life Insurance policy continue, at no cost to you.  It includes a $2,000.00 death benefit payable to your most recent beneficiary.  To be eligible for this policy, you must meet the Pennsylvania School Employees Retirement System (PSERS) "Normal Retirement" criteria:

  • At age 62, you must have 1 or more years of service  (although you must have had the Active Life Insurance policy for at least 10 years)
  • At age 60, you must have 30 or more years of service
  • At any age, you must have 35 or more years of service

If you qualify, you will receive information concerning the Retiree policy with Aetna Life Insurance Company.  Please keep these forms with your vital records and update any beneficiary information as needed.

Disability Retirement:

When you apply for Disabiltiy Retirement, you will be sent information to continue your Active Life Insurance policy, at no cost to you. Please fill out these forms and send back to the School District, who will then forward the completed forms to Aetna Life Insurance Company for approval.  If you are approved, you may have to be recertified every year up to your 65th birthday.  At that time; contingent on your recertifications, your policy converts to the $2,000.00 policy - also at no cost to you.

The criteria for consideration for the Disability Life Insurance are:

  • You are under the age of 60 when you become totally disabled and are unable to work at any "reasonable job".
  • You have had an Active Insurance policy with the School District.
  • You have been totally disabled for at least 9 months.
  • Aetna Life Insurance Company receives written request for this coverage within 12 months after you cease active work.
