INITIAL ELIGIBILITY

If you are a student athlete with hopes of playing at a Division 1 or Division 2 college or university you need to be aware that you have to meet minimum academic standards to obtain initial eligibility. The NCAA Clearinghouse evaluates students courses, grades, and test scores, to determine whether students meet these academic requirements. The NCAA is committed to academic success and graduation of its student-athletes. Student athletes who are looking to compete at a Division 3 college or university do not need to register with the NCAA Clearinghouse (the individual college or university will determine initial eligibility).

NCAA INITIAL ELIGIBILITY AND COLLEGE ADMISSION ARE BOTH NEEDED

Admission to an NCAA college or university is not the same as NCAA initial eligibility. Each institution decides which students to admit, based on its admissions criteria. Keep in mind that if a student-athlete meets NCAA initial-eligibility standards, that student still may not be admitted to the institution. Likewise a student-athlete who gains admission to a college or university may not meet NCAA initial eligibility standards.
